NOTE: Betty Parsons was a noted artist, collector and art dealer. She opened her gallery in 1947. It soon became the most important space in which to view Abstract Expressionism in America. Among the artists who showed at Betty Parsons were: Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, William de Kooning, Ad Reinhardt, Clyfford Still, and Robert Motherwell. Tibor Gergely began his studies in Vienna, but was mainly a self-taught painter and illustrator. In 1939 Gergely emigrated to the United States where he worked in commercial art and children?s book illustration. He was best known for his many illustrations for Little Golden Books for whom he worked from 1942 until 1978, which included Tootle, 1945, The Taxi that Hurried, 1946, Scuffy the Tugboat and his Adventures Down the River, 1946, and The Little Red Caboose, 1953.
