Henry S. Reitlinger sale, Sotheby’s London, part V April 14, 1954, lot 314 where purchased by Schidlof Alister Mathews, Poole, Dorset

NOTE: Henry Scipio Reitlinger was a noted collector and scholar of old master drawings. In 1922 he published a handbook on how to start a collection as well as a book on old master drawings in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

When Sotheby’s London dispersed his collection it took a massive relay of sales to handle all the property. When this drawing appeared at auction it was part of larger sheet depicting a boy to left.

When Alister Mathews acquired the drawing he felt the boy to detrimental to the composition and had him cut from the composition.

Alexis Grimoux was self-taught artist who was known for his portraits and works of genre. He was admitted into the Academy of St. Luke in Paris and there occupied a prominent position. In 1740 he exhibited at the Salon Le Fluteur and Lã Espagnolette.

His paintings hang in many museums including those of Amiens, Bordeaux, Chantilly, Dresden, Geneva, Metz, Nantes, and Paris.
