18th Century Follower of Frans Hals

The Rommel Pot Player

oil on canvas

41"×33" (105 cm×84 cm)

PROVENANCE:

NOTE: Hals is thought to have executed two versions of the present composition both now lost. One type, of which our picture is representative, is exemplified by the version in the Earl of Pembroke’s Collection, Wilton House, Salisbury. It displays six children crowded around the musician. Another version as seen in the Kimbell Art Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago illustrate only five children. Other small differences occur as well. The rommel pot player could apparently be found throughout the year, but was particularly associated with Vastenavond (Shrovetide). He helped ensure the celebratory aspects of the day. The atmosphere here portrayed is one brimming with unadulterated joy, one with all faces radiating happiness.
