Florence Vincent Robinson is best known as a watercolorist. She trained in Paris with Pierre Vignal, Pascal-Adolphe-Jean Dagnan—Bouveret and Henri-Joseph Harpignies. The majority of her works are landscapes with an emphasis on city and garden views. Her travels took her to France, Holland, Italy, Luxembourg, North Africa, and Spain. She was a member of the Société des Aquarellistes, Paris and the American Water Color Society. A series of her Views of Versailles were purchased by the French government. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston owns Chateau de Versailles. The Hispanic Museum, New York has twelve Views of Spain. Other collections in which her work can be found are the Brooklyn Museum of Fine Arts, Harvard University and the Cleveland School of Art.
In an early self-portrait (Private Collection, Ardsley, New York) the artist sits at her easel dressed in white, the embodiment of the nineteenth century’s vision of the female artist. Yet her gaze directly engages the viewer, revealing the spirit of adventure which propelled her throughout Europe on a continuous quest to capture and record the beauty of her surroundings.
